Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center is a popular venue in downtown Lexington, serving as home court to the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program. Rupp Arena also regularly hosts headliner concerts, including TobyMac, Blake Shelton, and Creed, and has just over 20,000 seats. If you are arrested here, it’s important you understand your legal rights and the challenges ahead.
Common Criminal Charges at Concert Venues
While a person can be arrested for practically any offense at a large concert venue like Rupp Arena, some of the most common criminal charges include:
- Drug crimes – You could be searched at the concert and found in possession of drugs or paraphernalia, leading to drug crime charges.
- DUI – You could be pulled over for drinking and driving after enjoying alcoholic beverages at the arena or a pre- or post-party.
- Assault – You could face criminal charges for assault if you got into a fight at the venue or made offensive contact with someone else.
- Sexual assault – You could face charges if someone alleges you sexually assaulted them or committed some other sex crime at the concert.
Experienced criminal defense attorneys are equipped to handle any criminal charges you face.
If you are arrested after a concert at Rupp Arena, it’s important to know what steps to take to protect your legal rights.
Remain Silent
Police inform you of your right to remain silent as part of your Miranda Warnings. Exercise this right. Do not answer any questions police officers ask you about the alleged crime. Police are only trying to build a case against you. Don’t help them.
Ask to Speak to a Lawyer
The one exception to remaining silent is to ask to speak to a lawyer. Say this unequivocally: “I want to talk to a lawyer.” Once you make this direct request, police must stop their questioning and respect your rights.
Do Not Agree to a Search
Even if you are arrested, police might not have a right to search your vehicle, home, or other property. If they ask for permission, politely decline. Let them take the extra steps necessary to secure a warrant. They may not have probable cause to obtain evidence to use against you. Again, don’t make the job of convicting you easier for them.
Don’t Talk to Anyone Else About Your Case Besides Your Lawyer
While you may be dealing with difficult emotions and wanting to explain your side of the story, avoid talking to anyone about your case.
Some tips on dealing with social media include:
- Remember that private profiles are not truly private.
- Don’t talk about your case on social media.
- Don’t insult the police, prosecutors, judges, or others involved in your case.
Your communications with your lawyer are confidential and privileged, so you can speak to them honestly about your case. This rule does not apply to others.
Get Help If You Need It
If you have a problem with drugs or alcohol or need counseling for any of the issues that may have contributed to the case, seek help. You can contact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration by calling 1-800-662-4357 for confidential, free help from local health agencies.
